Fact Sheet: Outlook for Energy Storage in PJM

PJM needs to deploy 16 GW of energy storage to maintain grid reliability through 2032. A new report by The Brattle Group, commissioned by the U.S. Energy Storage Coalition, demonstrates the need to deploy energy storage at scale to make sure the grid has enough power to reliably meet demand in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) Interconnection territory, which spans large swaths of the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic.

The report urges PJM and state policymakers to take decisive action by:

  • Accelerating interconnection approvals to eliminate unnecessary delays  in connecting new energy storage resources to the grid.
  • Reforming market rules to harness the full potential of energy storage ensuring that it can provide the full range of services it is designed to deliver.
  • Streamlining and clarifying permitting at the state and local level to ensure new energy infrastructure can be built quickly, safely, and responsibly. Consistent standards for permitting energy storage projects can help lower costs  and reduce project development timelines.
